Eric Medlen Critically Injured In Crash @ Gainesville Raceway

Story from USA Today via the AP:

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — NHRA driver Eric Medlen was critically injured Monday in an accident at Gainesville Raceway, his team said.

Medlen, who drives for John Force Racing, was injured when his Funny Car crashed into the right guardrail during a test session. The 33-year-old was transported by helicopter to the University of Florida medical center, where he was being treated in the intensive care unit, the team said on its website.

His injuries were not disclosed.

"Eric's extended family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers," said Kelly Antonelli, spokesperson for the team. "At the same time, we would ask that you respect the family's privacy at this time and allow the medical staff to do its work."

Medlen, a six-time NHRA winner, participated in the Gatornationals on Sunday.

Medlen, a former crewman on Force's championship-winning Funny Cars, began his own driving career in 2004. He has six career victories.

Just terrible news... it seems to happen every other year or so that a driver in the NHRA is badly injured. Prayers to his family, hopefully there will be an update on his condition soon.
