Penske Racing Skirts The Rules Yet Again

The levels Roger Penske goes to in the racing business never ceases to amaze me.  Today, he bought the #22 of the former Bill Davis Racing, in order to attain the top 35 owners points - and will transfer them so Sam Hornish will be locked into the Daytona 500.

How nice: Hornish is locked in, and a future 4th Penske team could match the numbers: 2, 12, 22.  I hope they didn't say that seriously.

No matter how you feel about Penske, they're a smart group.  Perhaps more than that, I love how they continuously maneuver around NASCAR's rules.  Last year, they switched the #2's points to Hornish for his rookie year.  NASCAR then says no more of that.  This year, they buy a team and give the owner "minority interest" in the team and bam, there's the points.  It took them a little while to figure out the sponsorship deal with Alltel, but sure enough, the #12 for David Stremme will be fully funded by Verizon.

The teams haven't been running well on the track, but they've run circles around NASCAR's rules, and I've enjoyed watching.  It once again proves the point I've been saying for years: RACE TEAMS ARE SMARTER THAN NASCAR EXECUTIVES!!!

Greatpost Matt. Like I always say "If it ain't written, it ain't a rule." That goes for Creative Engineering and Penske outsmarting NASCAR. Smart move!
Wonder how many teams and fans will be hollering "Cheater".
Love it!
